Any way to shoot 16:9 photos without keeping the 4:3 photos on the phone?

Hello. I have a question about camera settings on iPhone.

We know we can take a picture in 4:3 ratio and use "Edit" function to crop the image to 1:1 or 16:9, or set the ratio to 16:9 and take photos using that setting.

However, either way, we will get a 16:9 photo in the Photos app, but on the phone (when we connect it to a PC or Mac), we have two files for that image--the original 4:3 photo and a 16:9 photo (with an E in the file name such as IMG_E1001.jpg), which takes up quite a lot of additional space on the phone if the user takes all pictures in 16:9.

Is there a way to only keep the 16:9 photos on the phone without having to keep the 4:3 image?

It would be a lot of work. You would have to save the 16:9 version as a file, then delete the image from Photos, empty Recently Deleted, then save the 16:9 version to Photos and delete the saved file.

Photos is keeping the 4:3 version, because it is inherently supporting a lossless workflow. Photos will never remove the original version, when we apply any adjustments or are cropping the image. And Photos does not offer any tools to help us to remove originals. We can always revert to the original version taken by the camera. The Camera is always making the photo as 4:3, then cropping it to the selected aspect ratio. And we can revert this crop, if we prefer a different section of the image.
