PowerBook G4

So I found a PowerBook G4, and I wanted to play old games on it that my current computer won’t play anymore.

Unfortunately, the computer won’t update. It’s currently at Mac OS X Version 10.3.9. I’m trying to update it, it says it’s not connected to the internet even though it has an Ethernet connection. I make google searches and it says google is “pretending to be google” and that’s it’s not secure. I try to click the link to download steam it says it can’t because it can’t establish a secure connection to the internet.

I’ve tried everything. Adding Google’s DNS number, resetting safari, emptying safari’s Cache…

is it a lost cause or is there another possibility?

While the PowerBook G4 (whichever exact build model year of several) was great

and remains an iconic device; with 'time-locked limited' usefulness now. A path to

upgrade a last supported Mac OS X 10.5.8 would be: seek, find, buy retail DVD 10.5.

Or a retail Tiger 10.4; and update these to last steps. 10.5.8/10.4.11.

Use a second Mac to go online, to find older downloads; wherever they exist.

About the only last supported web browser that may have residual security

could be • TenFourFox: https://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/

Last updated 05 Oct 2021. - I've 2 earlier Macs, both run OSX 10.5.8 & Tn4Fox.

Most of these alternative universe OS have been unsupported for quite awhile;

yet were a direction for tech minded users of Mac hardware to get past lack of

PPC systems once 10.5.8 was bypassed with Intel-based hardware.

Your old Mac needs at least a supported browser to go online; &/or a different Mac

to try & do the heavy lifting, to look for alternatives. [Non-Apple OS for Mac (G3/G4)

looks to require working ability to use Command line for set up and maintenance.]

Classilla for Mac OS 8.6 to 10.3.9 may be OK for test purposes; with Panther 10.3.9.

Read carefully to see the conditions where Classilla may be downloaded. TLS 1 is a

level of security to access online. That may be overcome, to download older files by

use of modern web browser, with advanced security; to go beyond those blocks.

For later non-Apple OS builds, which may not support old G3/G4 hardware

Do you mean update or upgrade? It won't update because there are no further updates to MacOS 10.3 Panther beyond 10.3.9.

The next OS, Tiger, requires installation discs to be purchased, and obviously they'd be used. Most Powerbooks went as far as 10.5 Leopard, and again discs would have to be obtained to make the upgrade.

As to internet access using Panther, it's probably the ancient security capabilities of your old system that is hampering your browsing. I found this also on an old Mac I had with MacOS 10.11 El Capitan which could not be upgraded further.

I don't have a working Mac which is running Panther, Tiger or Leopard any more so I can't be of any more assistance.

For info on browser(s), for Mac OS 8.6 through 10.3.9 and G3/G4/G5 PPC Mac

best support was last fastest G4/G5, which were used to write later versions.

..Fastly fading into the sunset, otherwise..

• TenFourFox Development includes reference 'Classilla' (see above archive)

https://tenfourfox.blogspot.com/

A working portal into those is almost a backdoor now. Builders or those who

seek to keep the older Macs alive, with some type of native OS support could

help; if you've of technical mind, with suitable vintage/obsolete hardware.

Maintainers of those site archives, will likely be forced to close; unless helped.

That said, I'm scarcely positioned to follow through or try to save these ideas.

Good luck & happy trails! ☺︎
