2017 Macbook Vs 2015 Macbook Pro

I’m looking to introduce my wife to the world of Apple (outside of phones)

with our budget I could get a 2017 Macbook or a 2015 MBP, She mostly needs it for zoom calls, spreadsheets etc, does anyone have any reason to make me think the 12” Macbook would be the better purchase over the older MBP.

My main concern is OS updates, and speed with latest updates, will the newer but less powerful machine cope vs the older pro.

While perhaps a consideration refurbished portables from Apple may

have something, to compare in price; with optional AppleCare plan?

In previous years, sometimes their 'Clearance' page had a few deals.

You may see what versions of present macOS an older Mac portable

could be upgraded to from this page:

Other 'authorized Apple resellers' may offer new/old stock, or in-house

repaired models & short term guarantees. These may be holiday scarce.

Of course local companies are better choice. Some seem OK online.

Good luck & happy computing! ☺︎

Mmm... Well, 2015 is the cutoff for macOS Monterey... So, that 2015 MBP won't update anymore pass this OS version. How much are you spending per machine? IF you do not need a portable machine... the new Mac mini M1 is $700 for the entry model... so that might be a better option... Also, another thing you should keep in mind since Apple is switching architectures from Intel to Apple silicon... It might be more difficult to find support or parts for your machine in the future...

The 2017 MacBook has only one single USB-C port. This can be a pain in the neck when you want or need to connect external devices especially when you are charging the laptop. If anything happens to this one USB-C port, then you will not be able to charge the laptop, but luckily the USB-C port can be replaced by a repair tech as long as parts are available.
