Restart in Safe Mode Safe mode may help you resolve or isolate problems that you’re having with your Mac.

When you start up in safe mode, your Mac prevents some software, such as startup items, from loading, and it performs a check of your startup disk. Your Mac may take longer to start up because of the check.

And then test if the issue persists.

To exist Safe Mode - just restart normally.

What type of files are on the disk? If Time Machine then you can't write to it since it is Read Only.

What specific disk manufacturer> Some disks do not work with Monterey.

What does Disk Utility say about the disk? Providing screenshots of what Disk Utility show may be useful

Can you read files from the disk?

Are you connecting directly to the Mac (not through hub)? Some hub do not work with MOnterey.
