No option to select carrier line for SMS with dual SIM

iPhone XS Max with dual SIM (one physical, one eSIM) and iOS 15.1, has no option to select carrier line for sending SMS or iMessage. Settings > Cellular only has option to select Default Voice Line, not Default Line for either voice or messages as implied at https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT209044. Option to choose a number before sending an iMessage or SMS/MMS message (see same link) is not available. Such option is available for voice calls. This question was also asked earlier at https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252146929 with no real answer.

Hello and welcome to Apple Support Communities, gPaq.

If we understand your post correctly, you're unable to select a default line for calling or texting with dual SIM. We’d like to help.

We see you were viewing "Using Dual SIM with an eSIM" and it did not resolve your issue. Were you able to select a default number to use when calling someone not in your contacts list? If so, that same number will be the default when sending a text message to someone not in your contacts list.

To select the default line too use with a given contact follow the steps in the "Use two phone numbers for calls, messages, and data" section of the article.

Let us know if that resolves this issue for you.

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities.

Thank you for your attention to my question. In summary:

Settings > Cellular only has option to select "Default Voice Line", not Default Line for either voice or messages as implied at https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT209044.

As such I can correctly select one of two available carriers but only for Voice calls.

The problem is that I do not have that option to choose an outbound carrier line for sending an iMessage or SMS/MMS. It seems all messages are automatically attempted on my second line (this happens to be the eSIM). The Messages app does not show the Primary or Secondary button as illustrated in the referenced online article.

I have an unlocked phone and I am using two different carriers.

Thank you for your further help in this matter!
