Macbook Pro 13" (A1706): screen turns off while using it, doesn't turn back on

While using my macbook pro 13inch A1706 model.

the screen shuts off while using it. this is not a screensaver or idle sleep setting, because i am actively using the macbook and the screen abruptly shuts off.

i connected an external monitor via hdmi (on the usb c port) and it works on that screen but the macbook screen remains off.

I usually close the lid and let it sit for a while, and at random times i can open the lid and it works again until it shuts off after a few mins.

is this an issue with the screen? the lcd inverter? I am thinking this is a hardware issue

any advise

thanks

These USB-C Apple laptops are known for a defective design with the display cables. You will need to have Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider examine the laptop to provide you with a repair estimate. Sometimes if you close the lid of the laptop and very slowly open the lid to less than 45 degrees you may see the backlight come back on so you can see the video on the display.

Apple has a free repair program for this issue if you have the 2016 model, but only up to 5 years from the date of purchase:

FYI, here is the current list of the publicly acknowledged free repair programs for various Apple products (some products such as your laptop may have multiple programs):
