This video is in a format that can’t be streamed

Airplay gives a message ‘this video is in a format that can't be streamed to this tv’ when I attempt to play personal home movies downloaded on my iPhone. All are MP4 and it will let me show Apple TV+ content but not my personal home movies.

‘MP4’ encompasses more types of video files than iPhone or Apple TV can play. Your file must pass both subsets. Verify the codecs used. Safest is to use H.264 with AAC audio, from current software with Apple TV presets.

- Does the file play OK on the iPhone, i.e. without using AirPlay?

- Does a new iPhone camera recording play OK with AirPlay?

If it helps, I am using MacXDVD ripper.

That seems to create valid files that AirPlay fine on my side (with the tryout version). I tried both the default output profile (General Profiles﹥MP4 Video [Recommended]) and the Apple TV profile (Apple Device﹥Apple TV Video﹥The New Apple TV (H264) [Recommended]).

How did you get the files on your iPhone? Maybe that is causing an issue … E.g. Home Sharing files can’t be streamed again via AirPlay; iCloud Drive files can only be screen mirrored. You have to properly sync the videos to AirPlay from the TV app.

Have you tried AirPlay from the Mac (in-app AirPlay from iTunes/TV app/QuickTime Player/Safari) to the Apple TV (without the iPhone)?
