I don't believe I'm getting the usual "ding" notification when I receive a text from someone using an Android phone, but I DO get the ding from other iPhones. How do I solve this? Thanks!

Probably you have enabled Hide Alerts.
SMS and iMessage notifications settings are not different. However. please check if you have enabled Hide Alerts for a specific message thread.

Thanks! I don't believe this was a "hide alerts" problem, but your suggestion sent me on a helpful track and I think (hope?) I've solved the problem.
