update to Monterey
I am trying to download Mac OS Monterery. How long will this download take... it has been almost 24 hours... how can I tell if it is still downloading or if it stopped?

Sounds like your Network download speed is suspect...
Download time is relative to download speed. Try getting on a faster Network.
If the download is complete ~12-13 GB in size, typically it will auto launch— you can quite the installer like any other app if you are not ready to proceed.
The full installer sits in your Applications folder "Install macOS Monterey.app"
