How can I connect my older macbook air to a portable monitor?

I have an older macbook air from mid 2013. How can I use a portal monitor if my mac does not have usb-C?

I understand you have a 2013 MacBook Air. You will need an adapter to connect it to an external display. The type of adapter will depend on the inputs the external display has. Most common are VGA, HDMI and DVI. The 2013 MacBook Airs have a MiniDisplay Port so you will need MiniDisplay port to VGA or HDMI or DVI adapter. You can normally find them at Amazon. Do not get a cheap one as quality does matter.

For example if the external display is HDMI you will need one like: Amazon.com: Mini DisplayPort to HDMI, Benfei Mini DP to HDMI 4K Adapter (Thunderbolt Compatible) Gold-Plated Cord Compatible for MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, Mac Mini, Microsoft Surface Pro 3/4 : Electronics
