Replied Email Icon Doesn't Find Replied Emails - update

I wanted to reopen the conversation from here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252117815

That is because I went to that thread to see if a solution was found because I noticed something weird today.

I too, am using Big Sur 11.6.1, Mac mail version 14.0 on my M1, and lost the ability for the little reply arrow beside email in my inbox actually being a live link to the said sent email. It does not work on the M1 air.

So today I was working on an older computer, and noticed that it was there and it WORKED.

It ALSO was using Big Sur, but a tad older version of 11.6.0 and same mail version of 14.0.

This laptop was a mid 2014 MacBook Pro retina.

Now, one thing I noticed: the arrow is only active as a link if "use column layout" is NOT selected in the mail view mode. It doesn't work other wise.

At any rate, the bottom line is, I have 2 MacBooks with nearly identical software acting differently. Unfortunately, it doesn't work the way I want it too on the M1 (having an active reply link that links to the mail that you sent).

No fixes for this yet???

Frag Tagger,

Thanks for the clarification. Do you have multiple accounts and if so, does this happen with all accounts? If this happens in all email accounts on this Mac but not on your other, test in safe mode to see what occurs there. Since safe mode prevents certain software from loading, that can help isolate the issue a bit. Check out How to use safe mode on your Mac for guidance.

Kind regards.

  • Yes it happens with all my email from all accounts
  • It still happens (arrow is not clickable) in safe mode
  • Curiously, on my wife's MacBook air M1 - it works like the 2014 model mentioned above: ex: the reply links are clickable when NOT using column layout.
  • On mine, they're not clickable either way.
  • The way it used to be, the way we want it, is the have those reply arrows always clickable (and lead to the sent/replly email)

Thanks for your input but you don't understand.

When you reply to an email, and then go back and look at the original email, that you replied to in your inbox list, there is a little black arrow to the left of it that shows it has been replied to.

See the pic below.

That arrow used to be a clickable link. The arrow itself used to be clickable so you could quickly go back and look at the reply that you sent them. As it stands now, you have to go digging in your sent mail to see the mail you sent them. That little clickable reply arrow, was helpful to quickly go and look at what you sent them.

Hope that is clearer.

Hi Frag Tagger,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. If we understand correctly, when you click the reply arrow the original message does not show up in the reply. Right?

In that case, go to Mail > Preferences, then click Composing and select 'Quote the text of the original message." Check out Reply to, forward, or redirect emails in Mail on Mac.

If the reply arrow doesn't appear at all, does this happen with all emails and all senders? Does this happen with a certain inbox or all if you have multiple? That will help isolate the issue a bit further.

Take care.
