Tried turning on my MacBook after not having it for 20 months, now some of the keys aren’t working and I can’t login or reset or anything. Obviously I need to take it in for a service but would like to back up etc. Is there anyway of getting an onscreen Keyboard from the lock/login screen?

Verify your Caps lock is not on—psswd are case sensitive.
You will not see the psswd in the clear.

Try an external keyboard. Everybody needs at least on confirmed working external KB for reasons like this.
