Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and depending on which iMac model you have, click on El Capitan, High Sierra, Mojave, Catalina, Big Sur, or Monterey.

Make sure you have a backup first!

But what year is your iMac? Go to the Apple menu () > About This Mac. You may have to select “More info”.

There is no such thing as a 2016 iMac, and any iMac after 2014 won’t run OS X Mavericks 10.9. What year do you really have?

What version of Mac OS (note it is no longer OS X) are you attempting to update to? If it is Big Sur or later, please note none of your 32 bit third party apps will run. This is what you may be running into however we do not have any information about your system. Please answer the first question, then we can go from there.
To Clarify, I purchased my iMac in 2016. The operating system is OS X version 10.9.5. I would like to update this.

I see Big Sur is also compatible
Big Sur will not run on a 2013 iMac. The last version of Mac OS a 2013 iMac will run is Catalina.
