turn off icloud photo sync

I would like to turn off the iCloud Photos and use the iCloud only to sync with contacts and such. I was to download all original photos and videos from iCloud and got this prompt. Shall I click the red <Remove from iPhone> button (see screen shot)?

After I complete this task, I hope this iphone's photo will be seperated from iCloud so that I can clean up the iCloud storage for syncing only the contacts and other important info. Is this a correct understanding?

Thanks

Hey Teddy,

Thanks for participating in Apple Support Communities. We understand that you're wanting to stop using iCloud Photos, and when turning off the option you see an alert and the option to "Remove from iPhone". The alert is saying that it could not download all original photos and video's to your iPhone. Choosing this option may cause you to lose some of your pictures. Take a look at the information under "How do I turn off iCloud Photos on only one device?" for steps: Get help with iCloud Photos

We also thought you'd find the following resources helpful:

Manage your photo and video storage

We hope this helps.

Take care.

Thank you for your reply and suggestions and links. They are helpful but I think I should tell you my ultimate goals so that you may help even better. Before I purchased this iphone 13 pro I was using an android phone. Ultimately I would like to transfer my photos from that device. But before that I would like to consolidate my photos from previous iPhones, which are stored in iCloud. My hope is to remove all photos from iCloud (5G) and store them in iPhone 13, with 256G of memory. I would only use icloud to back up sensitive information such as contact and calenders. I can back up my iphone photo with a local drive on PC. Of course this has to be done after I am certain that my icloud space is decoupled with iphone photos so I don''t end up removing photos the from iphone. That is why I have been trying to download all original photos and videos from icloud. But then I see the warning that it cannot be done. I don't understand why the 200+ G space cannot take everything on the 5G icloud. Obviously I did do it right.

Let me reiterate my goals:

  1. Download all original photos and video from icloud to iphone;
  2. Disconnect this iphone's photo APP from icloud;
  3. Use iCloud to only back up Contact and Calender and other personal info.

Please advise.

Thanks,

Teddy
