I would like to remove one of my email aliases (john@mydomain.com) from my mailbox because John now has his own family account. I've removed the alias from my account, but when I try to add the address to John's account, it doesn't work, I get the error message "This email is already in use with another Apple ID." What can I do to get this done?

What we would recommend then is to Contact Apple Support. This way, they can look into the iCloud accounts directly and see what's going on.

Was the email in question ever used as an Apple ID on its own for things such as purchases(free or paid) or subscriptions? If so, then it will be registered as a full Apple ID and cannot be associated with another Apple ID.

We understand that you want to clear an email address that was formerly associated with your Apple ID. Removing it from aliases is good. Have you also removed it from reachable sections? Make sure that email isn't showing anywhere else on your Apple ID settings.

I've checked all the reachable sections of my Apple ID settings, the email address doesn't seem to be used anywhere else. The moment I remove the mail alias from my account, and then try to link as an email alias to John's account, I still get the error message. Or would the email address have to be unlinked for some time before you can link it again?
Hello SannonM1, thanks for helping me out. As far as I can tell it has never been used as an Apple ID. I found out that I also can recreate the issue.
If I 1) add an alias testxyz@mydomain.com to my iCloud account using custom email domain, 2) check if the mail address is working properly, 3) remove the alias address again from my account 3) login to john's iCloud account and 4) add testxyz@mydomain.com as an alias I get the message "This email is already in use with another Apple ID.".
