MBP 16 M1 Max - issue with 87W charging dock (kernel panic while in sleep).

Hello,

I have a problem with my Caldigit TS3+ dock since I've been using it with the new MacBook Pro 16 M1 Max.

When I'm turning off MacBook, or going to sleep TS3+ dock is going to sleep for about 10 seconds. Then it wakes up (blue light), then after about 20 seconds goes to sleep (no blue light), wakes up after 10 s. and loop continues. After a short period, Mac is resetting itself and displaying kernel panic.

My exact setup is:

Caldigit TS3+ dock connected to MacBook Pro 16 M1 Max 64Gb (only one cable connected to laptop).

TS3+ connections:

Display Port - LG 4K monitor

Ethernet Cable

USB lightning Cable

USB Logitech Unifying Reciever

I've tried unplugging each cable at once and the problem persists.

Also tried plugging in MagSafe charging cable but with no results.

I had run a couple of more tests to pinpoint where is the problem.

So I unplugged everything from the dock, besides power and tb3 cable, and connected it to three of my Macs.

  1. iMac Pro with Monterey - no issues
  2. MacBook Pro 13 M1 Big Sur - no issues
  3. MacBook Pro 16 M1 Max Monterey (fresh from the box, latest OS update) - the dock is in a loop

I read on online forums that kernel panic after sleep with charging dock is a common issue. I believe it is not OS specific problem but a hardware / firmware issue with MacBook M1 Max ports. Yes, I tried this on all 3 usb-c ports.

I'm not sure if this is a problem with my specific Mac or it is a common issue with 87W charging docks. Does anyone have the same problem? Is there any solution? I've contacted Caldigit support, and they said the problem is at Apple's side.

UDP

I installed utilities from: https://downloads.caldigit.com/

Apple SuperDrive, Apple Keyboard, and Improved iPhone/iPad Charging *Last updated on 01/22/21. Compatible with macOS Big Sur.

Docking Station Utility *Last updated on 03/26/21. For both Intel-based and Apple M1-based Macs. One click to eject USB-based drives.

Now after going to sleep, the external docking station turns off and no one wakes up

Later I will try to connect several monitors, maybe this problem is gone

Network cable always plug-in

Activity Monitor -> Energry: Nothigh preventing sleep

My issues

  • Can't connect a second HDMI Monitor. It starts turns off and on every ~1..2 seconds
  • Can't connect a second USB device. It starts turns off and on every ~1..2 seconds
  • Try to enter "Sleep mode". It wakes up after 30 seconds. If I remove the dock, it sleeps as it should.

% pmset -g | grep sleep
sleep 1 (sleep prevented by powerd)

I’m having the same flashing issue with the M1 pro max. I had a OWC Thunderbolt 3 pro dock…no matter the cable configuration to the monitor same alternating on abs off display situation. I ordered a OwC Thunderbolt 4 hub and it’s doing the exact same thing. I initially thought it could be Happening because the machine was restored from a time capsule….so I started from scratch…same thing. I’ve been on the phone with OWC 7 times not I believe it’s for some some issue with my machine
