QuickTime Video Recording Freezes

I'm a professor, so I often use Quicktime to record a lecture with the onboard camera on my MacBook Pro (2020) running Monterey 12.0.1.

Yesterday something happened that has occurred a few times before: the video froze during recording. However it did not freeze at the beginning or the end. It was intermittently a problem in the middle, so I had no idea there was an issue until I went to edit the footage. Due to pressing deadlines I couldn't re-record. Thankfully the audio was fine and I just used a photo with the audio.

The recordings were all relatively brief. The longest was 16 minutes. Of the five pieces I recorded, the glitch only happened with two of them. One common denominator in the ones that were affected: I used Word as my on-screen script. Could using Word while recording affect the video? If that is the problem, is there a work around?

Fixing this is critically important for my work. Insights appreciated.

I have also dealt with this problem and it's been a bit of a nightmare. In the spring of 2021, it happened A LOT and cost me hundreds of hours of work (I was making video lectures). On some - but not all - recordings, the video freezes but the audio continues. It seems to happen at random, regardless of the length of the recording, the location, the background or anything else.

The problem also occurs when working with external web cams. It occurs when I record with Camtasia or with Quicktime. It occurs when other apps are running and when no other apps are running. It occurs when I'm on wifi and bluetooth and when everything is turned off. It occurs on battery power and when plugged in.

Last year I was in constant contact with apple support in The Netherlands. I did a gazillion tests for them. I booted in safe mode, I made a test account, I ran multiple diagnostics. I cleaned installed the OS - more than once - and nothing helped. I made several test recordings and ran diagnostics and sent everything to apple support and I was ultimately told that this was a software/os issue and/or had something to do with codecs. I was told it would be resolved in an upcoming update but I've heard nothing since and this week, after almost a year, I tied recording a video again (last year I had to switch to using my phone) and, you guessed it, the problem is still not resolved.

I know I can shoot with other cameras and import to my Mac, but I can't shake my irritation with the fact that the camera in a 2,000 euro computer ought to work just fine, and I NEVER had a problem like this before early 2021...

Please tell me somebody is going to fix this. I have colleagues who have the same problem.

Hello SummaEclectica,

Thanks for reaching out using Apple Support Communities!

We understand your screen recordings are not working at certain times during your presentations.

You're correct, this is likely related to one of the apps being used at the time of the recording.

This Apple Support page has more details: How to record the screen on your Mac - Apple Support

Specifically from the article: 'Some apps might not let you record their windows.'

You might test your apps individually to see which ones are not allowing the recording.

We hope this helps isolate and resolve the issue.

Cheers!

Hello SummaEclectica,

Thanks again for reaching out using Apple Support Communities!

We understand there are a few things happening during the recording, we appreciate those details.

Are you using a third-party app as part of the process during the recording?

Were you able to isolate the issue further by recording with only one app open at a time?

Have you been able to check your RAM, CPU, andstorage space on the Mac to ensure your system isn't causing the issue?

We'll need to learn a little more about this to better assist, but we hope this helps.

Cheers!

I'm having the same issue since updating to Monterey. I create videos of myself playing and singing my original music to post to social media and YouTube. This is terrible now. I've tried with the Quicktime app being the only one open and it only marginally helps. I used to do this several times a week and now I can't get a single video completed. Usually it get a few frames and then it freezes for most of the video. Sometimes it starts moving at the end of the video.

This is really awful. I have a 2019 MacBook Pro with 64 GB or Ram, the fastest processors and video card the MacBooks had at the time and plenty of Hard Disk space.

Please update Monterey to not be such a memory hog so we can get back to work.

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, that isn't the issue I'm experiencing.

I'm not trying to record my screen. I'm trying to record myself using the FaceTime camera while using a Word document as a script, like an on-screen "teleprompter." This method has usually worked in the past, but occasionally it has been a problem. Since I am rarely able to re-record due to deadlines, I really need to have a reliable solution. I'd rather not use a paper copy, if possible. Thanks for your help.
