Xcode Installation Progress

I have searched but have not found any way of telling the actual installation progress for Xcode an update. Every response to this question talks about the App Store progress bar and/or the LaunchPad progress bar, but these do not tell any information about installation progress itself. Instead, they appear to ONLY indicate the download progress. Since it takes only seconds for high-speed download but multiple hours for installation, it is ultimately a useless metric entirely. In my case, it has been stationary (at 7.49 Gb/7.49 Gb) for several hours. I therefore have no way of determining whether it is installing or is simply looping continuously.

So, again it is asked: How do I tell that the installation (not the download) is progressing?

Thanks.

Hey there RWESTOB,

We'd like to help answer your question as best we can.

As it appears stuck at that step for the last several hours, and there's no change, we recommend quitting out of the app(force quitting if needed), then restarting your Mac. Check out the section 'Restart' here: Log out, sleep, wake, restart, or shut down your Mac

If the issue remains when you try using the Xcode app, we recommend contacting Apple: Get Support

Just in case, we also found a link to contact Apple Developer Support. Have a good one!

Thanks for the quick response, Bruno75, but this wasn't relevant, let alone helpful. The question that I asked was avoided altogether. Instead a question that I didn't ask at all was answered. Was it TL;DR?

Simply put, the question that was asked (again) was: How do I tell that the installation (not the download) is progressing?

In my specific case the installation wasn't "stuck", and a restart was already performed prior to the update (SOP). It completed in a little more than 3 hours, spending most of that time (>2 hours) with no change at all. From my own experiences, the appearance of no change for multiple hours during installation is completely normal for Xcode installations and updates. The only issue is that the system provides no indication of the progress of the installation, only the progress of the download.

I expected a response that this was not currently available, but I hoped for an answer that was something like:

  • Terminal command that would have provided the estimated percent of completion, or
  • Detailed process status information in a hard-to-find place of the Activity Monitor app, or
  • Something else that is similarly obscure and unknown to the average person.

If there is currently no way to determine the progress of the installation of the app (post download), then I would suggest that this be considered for future changes to the either the App Store or to Xcode itself.

Thanks!
