iOS 15.2 Battery Drain

Is anyone experiencing battery drain since updating to iOS 15.2? If so, any tips for what to do about it? I just updated this morning. Thanks!

As posted in the 15.1 battery drain thread, some of the fixes that I found might help with 15.2 as well. I'm talking about drain that persists for more than the 1-3 days after an update while Spotlight is indexing. I had my iPhone 13 Pro Max and iPad Mini 6 BOTH draining enough to run dry in 20 hours of standby, and fixed it completely, so I'm still on 15.1 with no issues..

1) Turn off Apple News Widget on your Home Screen if you have it configured. I had seen that Apple News was using a lot of battery in "Settings > Battery" and I wasn't using it. Turning off background app refresh made no difference in battery use and drain in the background. Then I discovered the widget hiding on the screen to the left of the Home Screen that has my app icons, and turned it off. That reduced my drain from 5-7% per hour to only 3-5% per hour. I also turned off most of the other widgets except Calendar, Reminders, and Battery level for bluetooth accessories (watch, and AirPods).

  • Turning off other widgets had no impact on battery drain.
  • Turning off push mail had no impact to improve battery.
  • Turning off Background app refresh had no impact on improving battery.
  • BEFORE I REMOVED APPLE NEW WIDGET EVEN LOW POWER MODE DIDN'T SEEM TO IMPROVE DRAIN.
  • ONLY AFTER I removed Apple News Widget did low power mode make a difference in drain, and in Low power mode I could get though a 16-18 hour day without plugging into power. But not till I did #2 below could I turn off low power mode.

2) I had my iPhone 13 Pro Max and iPad Mini 6 paired with my iMac and MacBook 16", and had "show this iPad/iPhone when connected with WiFi" turned on. I "Reset Network Settings" which broke this pairing, and COMPLETELY solved my battery drain issue. I was later able to plug my devices back into my iMac and pair/Trust them, but I made sure to turn OFF "show this iPad/iPhone when connected with WiFi" when I Trusted them, and the drain has not come back.

Apparently the WiFi network connection between iDevice and Macintosh computer maybe has the iDevice phoning home continuously in 15.1, even when you are not on the home, and this system resource is still draining the battery regardless of low power mode or not. But my best guess is that when the iDevice is NOT looking out for the computer constantly, with "show this device on wifi", then the drain goes away completely FOR ME. This might not be your problem.

My new 2020 iPhone SE won't charge until it dies completely after latest update iOS 15.2.1, even with "Optimized Charging" turned off. All cables and chargers are brand new and work fine with my 2017 iPad Pro. Another issue after updating to my 2014 Mac mini from Monterey 12.0.1 to 12.1 I can no longer connect via bluetooth to my iPhone SE, immediately after pairing MacOS disconnects then my iPhone shows a window saying my Mac mini is unsupported. Apple did this because Everything worked fine before the updates!

Yes its become worse. I was gonna not be posting here anymore as Apple is removing comments that they don’t agree with.

Having said that, the developers and whoever is doing these updates do not reference these boards at all.- This is more group therapy for us… Even in terms of direct feedback through a separate link they are not even acknowledging that. This is just one of those issues that we are now stuck with as Apple have degraded battery life with iOS 15 permanently. Very unlikely to stick with an iPhone at this rate.

Funny thing is that Apple are now forcing people to upgrade to 15.x version as if 15.x has reached stable phase already. That's terrible news. I still hope that situation is caused by lots of bugs that are yet to be fixed and situation will improve. Maybe developers are not reading theses boards because they're perfectly aware of problems discussed here. We'll see.

BTW. Apple still allow to downgrade to 15.2 should somebody feel that 15.2.1 behaves much worse.

From what I know yes it was a trusted seller and it was factory sealed and brand new. All seemed exactly as should. but can I be 100% sure of anything, no.

As I said these weird drops only started after 15.2, hence how I came across this thread.

Though after letting it die before charging last night it does seem to be going down normally today at least until now. Maybe I ought to let it die more often before charging as I know some people do that after updates.

As fellow users, we don't know whether iOS 15.3 will correct the battery drainage problem.

"...or should I not bother upgrading software."

Nobody here can advise you whether or not to upgrade software.

Since we're just fellow users, tell Apple that:

Somehow we never learn our lesson. New features and so-called “security patches” upcoming, we panick and update iOS.

Then when new iOS brings problems, we update again hoping the problems get solved. It sometimes never.

Then new features and “security patches” upcoming again before the problems are solved.

This vicious cycle feeds on itself.

then one day we buy a new phone because of better cameras blah blah blan.

anyway my battery drain on iOS 15.3. Looks the same. But feels less bad then 15.2.1. Safari use draining less. Maybe a placebo effect

since updating to 15.2 my battery has significantly been affected.

Battery drains at an alarming pace.

However as of today, it’s not only draining at an alarming pace, it has been constantly moving up and down all afternoon on its own. 20% > 13% > 9% > 10% > 11% >23% > 9% > 1% > 12% etc

so weird to see the battery meter going up when it’s not evening charging.
