iOS 15.2 Battery Drain

Is anyone experiencing battery drain since updating to iOS 15.2? If so, any tips for what to do about it? I just updated this morning. Thanks!

It is off, and was never turned on.

From my observation so far I conclude that there's some kind of bug somewhere in the "lower layer" of iOS code responsible for iCloud synchronization. It affects people in different ways, and (what's much worse) it happens randomly. That's why there are so different opinions in this thread about possible causes of battery drain (but most of them connected somehow with data exchange between devices connected to same AppleId).

Bugs such as memory leak behave in this way and are very hard to diagnose and fix. I for one, have now two iPhones with identical configuration - SE (1st gen) and 12 mini. Smaller one consumed close to 0% of battery last 8 hours, second - with much bigger battery - about 15%! That's crazy. I'll still try to "play" with different settings, but I think there's nothing left (as always with closed source code) but to count on Apple for the problem to be solved in one of next releases.

I have an extreme case of battery drain with iOS15.2. I got it on my brand new iPhone 13 mini I bought at the end of December. Since then my battery is drained at a constant rate of about 15-20% per 3 hours, no matter what I do. It happens at the same rate during the night when my phone is at low-power mode + airplane mode + both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth disabled:

And my average day looks like this:

That's really impressive. Apple - great gift for Christmas. Thanks a lot!

There are a lot of suggestions like: (it's mine) disconnect your device from your AppleId account and see what happens, disconnect AirTag, reset network data, and many more. Some of them seem to help but only temporarily.

I think the best "solution" (not to waist precious time) is to wait for Apple to provide fix (hopefully soon). They release new releases on Thuesdays quite often. I hope this bug is critical enough for them to fix it soon. For now I'm using iPhone SE (1st gen) which seems to be not affected by this bug and playing with various fixes with my 12 mini (no success so far - battery consumption close to yours).

4Tanya - when I had battery drain that severe with no applications showing activity during the drain time period, it was always fixed by “resetting network settings” and not reconnecting and trusting my computer.

Once I connected to my computer and clicked “trust” if I left it connected to my phone via Wi-Fi the battery drain would return, even when away from home or Wi-Fi off.

Apple remove my comments from this board when I had mentioned that there was something ’’odd’ going on so in order to avoid my comments coming off again all I will say is this is a battery issue which I believe has been pre-programmed and no one of us can find a fix for it. Apart from Apple. I don’t believe that wiping your phone off resetting it is going to do anything. All I can say is that most people had excellent battery on 14 and it didn’t seem to be in the best interest for apple that those benefits were to continue into 15.

Maybe you're right, but the fact is that Apple has quite a lot of problems with quality of its software products lately Memory leak and battery drain (!) in Monterey 12, broken Xcode 13.2 release and so on. So the bug discussed here is not "alone". It makes no sense all these bugs would be intentional - cannot see reason behind. I still prefer theory that Apple launched so many new services (most of the network based) that they cannot manage to retain quality. As number of "functions" of provided software increase - number of tests and possible bugs rises exponentially. Anyway, Apple's one of the richest companies in the world and such degradation of quality is unacceptable.

It's definitely time to turn off automatic updates, and remember to wait for stable release (sooner or later it will come) and refrain from upgrading weeks/months till no bugs are reported by users.

BTW. I did some tests with connecting phones to computers and accepting "Trust". No impact in my case. My old iPhone SE still consumes ~0%/10h when not used. 12 mini consumes about 20% after clean installation! Both of them left alone for some time to do famous "indexing" (which I personally don't believe in - there's indeed some activity after reinstall but it last about 1-2 hours, not more. This 2-3 days "stabilization" time is just useful "story" for complaining customers). I thing it's another prove that this just an unintentional bug which affects users randomly.

Yep, I have the same feeling. As most of the resources they (and some folks in this forum) are typically referring to regarding battery issues. If you buy a phone, you just expect it to work, and you shouldn't really think or care about adjusting screen brightness, background refresh, know about indexing and battery optimization, etc. – the stuff which actually doesn't help much in fact based on my multi-year experience with iPhones.

I agree that it's just poor quality control on Apple's side that doesn't capture critical bugs in new releases. They seem to use us, regular users, as they actual QA in the field.

@jackv3

i’m so sorry that RESET NETWORK SETTINGS is not working for everybody. I know that every time I did that my battery life went back to normal. But if I plugged into my computer, clicked “trust“, and allowed my iPhone or iPad to be seen on the computer while connected over Wi-Fi then the drain came back with a vengeance. If I did NOT let it be seen when connected by Wi-Fi the drain did not return.

I HAVE NOT HAD BATTERY DRAIN SINCE DECEMBER 18 2021 on either my iPhone 13 Pro Max or iPad Mini 6, and I REFUSE TO LEAVE IOS 15.1.1 since Apple has not fixed 15.2 either. 15.2 MIGHT HAVE A NEW PROBLEM causing this.

I could assume that since the problem started with 15.1, and I found a solution for my phone and iPad, that same solution would work with 15.2 - but I don’t want to take any chances.

I can now use the heck out of my phone all day, and go to bed with 30% to 45% battery charge remaining after a good 8 to 9 hours of solid “screen on” use during a 13-16 hour day off the charger. Now, when I read reviews of the 13 Pro Max it seems like it should be even better, but this battery life beats my old 11 Pro Max by a good margin.

Yesterday I unplugged about 10AM and had over 10.5 hours of heavy “screen on” use by 2AM when I went to bed with 28% charge remaining. My iPad does still use about 20% charge per day in standby without touching it - it should last in standby longer than that. I can use it heavily for 8-9 hours on other days and use up 2/3 of the battery = similar usage drain to my iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Since upgrading to iOS 15.2 the battery of my iPhone 12 mini (bought in May 2021) lost 2% of it's capacity, it fell from 98% to 96% in three weeks.

I know the exact date when my problems began, it was on November 3rd, few days after upgrading to 15.1 in late October. I realized my battery consumption suddenly increased so I took a screenshot of it on November 8th. Since November 3rd my battery consumption doubled, it jumped from 60-70% a day to 120-140% a day, sometimes even more than 150%, with more or less same activity (about 4 hours per day screen on). Since then I recharge my 12 mini twice a day.

I tried every trick I know, I followed tips from this forum, nothing helped.

I don’t think it’s an issue with the battery. I think it’s an issue with the operating system sucking down CPU time and draining the battery, without giving credit to any particular app.

Although I did have some issues with Apple news widget, turning that off was the only other thing that had any impact on the significant battery drain that could empty the battery in 20 hours without touching the device

I bought my 13ProMax during Thanksgiving week, before Thanksgiving and it was fine and 15.01 and 15.02. I had to do the 15.0.0 update as soon as I took it out of the box, none of those updates car‘s battery drain my battery was at 100% capacity. After 15.1 battery drain was horrific and Battery Health was still 100%. 15.1.1 did not fix the battery drain, and battery health was still 100%

In my particular case reset network settings would fix the drain every time, but after a few days it would return. I then had to sit down and think about what was I doing to cause it to return after a few days. I made the connection (no pun intended) that I was plugging it into my computer to sync and back up and then my battery drain came back. It had something to do with the network connection being set up between my computer and my phone or my iPad. It was the same fix for both devices. My iPhone is still at 100% battery health.

I was hoping this fix would work for everybody.

LOST257 ~ With an older iPhone model such as the 7 Plus, it's worth checking the battery...

Does your iPhone 7 Plus still have its original battery?

And what's the Maximum Capacity % here?...

Sing I updated my iPhone to 15.2, I’m charging my phone 2-3 times a day and my iPhone lagging and freezing quite often. Before I use to charge once a day and used the same duration and by the end of the day I’ll still have at least 15-20 percent of battery left. I have to carry the charging cable everywhere with me now but the most irritating is freezing and lagging of my phone. I think Apple should fix this bug and find a update sooner.

So apple updated my 12 mini for me. I've got mine set for automatic updates off and on NYE it still did it for me. Very upset about it. And since then, it's run very hot, the battery drain issue and the back button on certain apps also will not work either.

This is especially frustrating because I've had auto updates off since my iPhone 6. Big middle you know what to you know who.
