Getting phone number from contacts

I want to take a phone number from contacts and use it elsewhere. I might put it in a calendar entry if I need to call someone. Or put it in a document. I may to go back and forth between the apps to get a full phone number, perhaps with extensions, then verify. And some places I want to paste the number will close, which requires that I jot down the phone number to copy between apps.

It's not uncommon for me to be on a conference call, going through my copies of a presentation, and need to add a todo on my list that includes the phone number.

But attempts to do so make my mac begin a facetime call. Or doesn't work.

I've tried clicking to the left and right of the field, right clicking, etc. IF I click just right (not sure how), it opens the item up for editing and then I can copy the phone number.

It seems that this is something needed frequently by almost everyone. Since I don't see others asking this question there must be something obvious to everyone else but not me. I've searched "copy phone number from contacts" here and elsewhere and maybe it's something that only I need.

How do I copy a phone number from contacts so I can use in another application? Considering all the possibilities that Apple provides (ctrl-c, adding fn, adding shift, adding command, adding shift, adding more than one of these, right click, clicking in a certain spot), how might I remember the correct choice without calling someone? Am I missing something? Is there a reason I should not be doing this?

Hi there, Jarmaracark,

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you want to copy a phone number from the Contacts app on your Mac and then paste it elsewhere. We're happy to help!

Open the contact you need the number from, and right- (or control-) click within the phone number (example: if the number is 123-456-7890, you can right-click between any two numbers). From the pop-up menu that appears, choose copy. From here, the number will be copied to your clipboard and you can paste it in other locations with a text field. Additional information for that phone number, such as extensions, will need to be copied separately.

If you are not able to copy numbers from the Contacts app in this fashion, try quitting the app: Quit apps on Mac - Apple Support and then restarting your Mac: Shut down or restart your Mac - Apple Support. Then, open the Contacts app while holding shift and try again.

Best!

As you're using a trackpad, a two-finger click is a much more straightforward way of selecting a phone number in Contacts than ctrl-click. See System Preferences - Trackpad - Point & Click - Secondary Click:

If you haven't already done so, you might also want to try Tap to Click: you hardly have to put any pressure on the trackpad, which saves wear and tear on the tendons 😉 It takes a bit of getting used to but it's a real time-saver when clicking and dragging.

There was a bug in Monterey 12.0.1 which made this hard to do consistently, but it has been fixed in 12.1, which was released a day or so ago.

Thank you. It seems to work differently on different phone numbers for some reason. Some allow me to scrape then ctrlc. The men with ctrl c sometimes has the items grayed out. Bt I can try different combination. Perhaps I need to be cautious if I am pressing on the right spot on the trackpad, or the sequence I use to when doing ctrl-click. But I can get it in .about two or three tries.

If I want to select a word to copy in word processing, or a word printed on the internet or something in a form field, I do the same thing. It's good to know that there is a different way for a phone number, but why would one even think that there was a different way? Apple led the way for standards across the industry.

Since variations on a command might add the Fn, Control, Option, Command, Shift key (5 possibilities), or even combinations of those (25? options). is there something that might hint to which one I should use before I try all of them? There are sheets I can print to tell me, but each program has it's own commands. There are hundreds of options for each program. That works for those with a particular learning style. It does not work for a vast number of people. No one should be required to know the commands before using a new part of a program.
