Sudden shut-offs since updating to 15.1 on iPhone

My iPhone which has been working perfectly until now, has suddenly started to shut itself off again and again. (I updated to IOS 15.1 recently). I discover at least once a day that the phone has shut itself off and when I try to restart it, it is suddenly without battery charge although it has been as much as half charged or more before shut-off. I have to plug it in to restart, and it seems that an absolutely crazy fast battery power loss has occurred in just half an hour or less – while the phone has not been used at all.

What on earth is going on?

Obviously having I phone that suddenly shuts off and has lost all battery power is very problematic.

Yes, it is an old model but I bought quite recently and it has given me zero problems up until now.

Hi FW7399994836,

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities.

We understand that your iPhone is dying randomly. Check your battery health in Settings > Battery > Battery Health. See if there are any alerts provided. If your battery health is 80% or below, it would be best to replace the battery. Is performance management enabled? Review additional details in iPhone Battery and Performance.

If there aren't any issues identified in your battery settings, make sure iPhone is updated to the latest version in Settings > General > Software Update and make sure that you're charging with an Apple cable or a certified compatible cable and adapter.

Regards.

FW7399994836,

You have a few options. You could back up your iPhone to iCloud or your computer and restore the software. If you prefer not to restore, you can contact Apple directly or visit a local service provider to run diagnostics on your phone. We've included some helpful links.

How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings

Restore all content to iPhone from a backup

Thanks for the response. Battery health is 86%, furthermore, the shut down problems stems from grotesque and very sudden emptying of power levels. The phone suddenly shuts down when battery has shown over 50% charge just half and hour earlier and while not being used at all. When trying to restart it shows battery completely out of charge.

Concerning updating the phone: Updating to 15.1 is actually what seems to have started the problems, they occurred shortly after update, as stated in my initial post.

There is something much more fishy going on, hence my post.

Any ideas?

Thanks

I see my problem seems to get a little misunderstood.

This is the pattern:

  • Phone suddenly shuts itself off.
  • It happens when I use the phone, not for calling, but with apps. Different apps, so not pattern there.
  • When I try to restart, phone battery is completely out of charge
  • Up until the moment of shut-off, the battery has been loaded at levels of around 50% or more. So the battery just loses all charge in a quick moment. See image.
  • Image of battery lever ("Batterinivå" in Swedish) shows how the battery dramatically drops to zero from a level of circa 48%. (The reason battery level immediately goes up after that, is because I've plugged it into a charger. That's why there is a high green staple to the furthest right.)
  • Problem has occurred after updating to 15.1, now I've updated to 15.2, problem persists.
  • Before updating no problems at all, so no problems with hardware or the like.
  • There are no apps that consumes big amounts af power, the drop in power is so dramatic that it's completely out of any ordinary energy usage.

Any ideas?

Hello I'm seeing the same issue with my first-gen iPad Pro 12" running iOS 15.2. I was playing solitaire. The battery level showed 100%. Then suddenly, black screen, followed by the battery-empty icon. WHILE IT IS PLUGGED IN. Clearly there's an issue here.

The first time this happened, several days ago, I left it plugged in, and eventually it started to charge again and was restored to normal functionality.
