System preferences doesn't load the photos when I want to change my desktop wallpaper on MacBook Pro

As the title says whenever I want to change my desktop background and go on photos in system preferences it tremendously lags and only loads in about 12 photos. This doesn't happen when I select an album, though I noticed it does lag with two of my albums that contains 29 - 48 photos whereas the others contain less. I've tried turning off the Mac but I saw no difference. I think it has to do with the amount of photos I have but it's only 224 photos I have on the Photos app. Has anyone else experienced this problem, and is it something that needs to be fixed by Apple?

From memory this was always an intermittent issue with Catalina when trying to access pictures from the Photos database via Media - Photos. Not just with System Preferences but with other applications too. Sometimes images would be listed, sometimes you had to try two or three times, and as you say, if they did appear then. scrolling through them could be very slow.

My impression is that the situation improved greatly with Big Sur and Monterey. If it's an issue for you, and if your Mac is capable, then it might be a good reason to upgrade your OS.

Cheers,

H

The report looks good, none of the usual suspects indicated. However, it says you don't have Time Machine enabled. Do you have a backup program enabled? You should if you don't already. You could lose all of your data is there's a drive failure.

Try this: as a test launch Photos with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos, make it your System Photo Library and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it? This tells us if the problem is limited to your current library or is more wide spread.

Please read the following user tip and restate your question/problem in detail

What system and Photos versions are you running?

Are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?

Do you have iCloud Library enabled and, if so, is "Optimize Mac Storage" enabled also?

Boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

I don't know much so thank you for your response and I'll put the details below

system version: 15.0

Photos version: 7.0

As for if I'm running a managed or referenced library I don't quite know what that means so I searched it up, the I go to general on photos preferences importing: copy items to the Photos Library is check marked so I'm guessing I have a managed library. I also don't have iCloud library enabled. I'll boot into safe mode inform you if the problem is fixed or not. Thank you for your time :)

By the way this is how it looks when I try and change the desktop, I scroll down and it moves very slowly

Hi there, I already have my Mac upgraded to macOS Monterey 12.1 and I don't recall ever upgrading to Catalina. Also it only lags for the Photos app specifically while it doesn't lag for the Apple wallpapers, and I haven't seen this problem on my Mac anywhere else. If I can't find a solution then I will import the photos to pictures on the Finder app because it doesn't lag on preferences. Thank you for your response :)

Yeah pretty sure my mom hasn't done anything like that, and like I said not really something much of value to save on this Mac but if there's something I don't want to lose I'll find some way to keep it safe. I feel like it's just because this laptop is kinda getting old. Don't really know if you still feel like helping me or if there is much else to do so I'll just add the photos to a folder on Finder and end it here. Thank you for your time, patience, replies, and happy early new year :)

System 10.15, Catalina, has an earlier version of Photos than 7.0, i.e. V 5.0.

To be honest, this isn't my own laptop it's my moms. She bought it around 2019 I believe and only recently gave it to me for school, so I don't know if I have a backup program enabled. This laptop also doesn't have any important Information or anything important to my mom, but to me I just have photos, notes, passwords and that's about it. I made a new library and added a bunch of screenshots into it and made it my system photo library, it still lagged.
