The Apple silicon 16" MacBook Pro doesn't ship with the regular M1 chip. It can either have an M1 Pro or M1 Max chip inside.
I don't know whether it's possible for sure, but they should work together with the proper adapter(s).

you need a third-party adapter from USB-C computer-end to Mini DisplayPort jack for your display cable to plug in.
Apple does not provide an Apple brand adapter because essentially, "they have nothing special to add to make it magical".
Remember, you can not 'stack' adapters. you must make the transition from computer output to display input in at most ONE adapter.
