Transfer music to MacBook Air

I have most of my music on my 2012 iMac and my iPhone 13. I'd like to get it onto my MacBook Air (M1). I thought I could just use a USB-c to a USB cable but the Air didn't show up in Finder. I'm not subscribed to Apple Music. Some of my music. was purchased from iTunes and some was downloaded from CDs. Is it possible to sync the music on the iMac and Air? Also, I tried syncing from the iPhone to the Air. Even though it said "Sync" it looked like it would only move from the Air to the iPhone.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

That is correct - the syncing process goes from the computer to the iPhone and not the other way around. To transfer you library, see How to move your iTunes library to a new computer - Apple Support for Apple's approach to this topic.
