I'm missing a mail received notice on watch

I have an iPhone 13 Pro Max and a Series 7 Apple watch with cellular service via AT&T, each updated with the latest operating systems as of today.

I can read and reply to email on the watch even when the phone is turned off but I cannot get the watch to display the dot that should show me that new email has arrived.

Am I overlooking a setting?
