3g sunset and iphone

Help, I have not been able to get a reliable answer on what upgrade I need (if any) in order to have a working iphone post-3g sunset. My (soon to be former) service provider, Boost Mobile, claims that no phone released prior to October 2020 will work with its 5g "expanded national network." Other sources say that only iphone 5 and earlier will not work, or that if the phone is VoLTE-capable, it will work. If the latter two are true, then my trusty model A1662 first generation SE should still work. If the first is true, then even a second generation SE will not work, and millions of us are suddenly going to need to invest in new phones. Frankly, I do not trust Boost Mobile, which has a financial incentive to get me to upgrade. What is the truth here?

When it comes to 4G/LTE and 5G the old “cdma” versus “gsm” limits really don’t apply. Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T all are using 4G/LTE and 5G.

My understanding of Dish’s deal with AT&T for Boost Mobile is because T-Mobile is shutting down that very Sprint network you’re device is currently using. Dish wasn’t happy with T-Mobile over that so made their deal with AT&T. I believe that move of Boost to AT&T is supposed to be completed by March 2022.

T-Mobile has already killed off 3G voice service on their network and exclusively use VoLTE and AT&T recently completed the same change. So only devices that support VoLTE calling are now supported, which your SE is capable of (it came out after the iPhone 6 which was the first model to support VoLTE).

Physically, your 1st Gen SE will work on any USA carrier as it supports the bands used by each.

Here in the U.S., all three of the major networks - AT&T, T-Mobile/Sprint and Verizon - will have completed the shutdown of their 3G networks by February, March and December 2022 respectively, as per linked article. Hence, the urgency of knowing how this will impact me and a lot of other people.

Sorry, did not complete the link attachment the first time.

If I knew the answer to that, I would not be on this forum. My phone lists "3G" and "LTE" as two separate options for voice & data. No mention of 4G. Does "LTE" by itself mean the phone will keep working? I don't know. And if the phone will stop working, how far to I need to upgrade? If my carrier is to be believed, nothing short of an iPhone 12 or 13 will function on a major network by the end of 2022. Second gen SE and iPhone 11 would not make the cut.

Boost is in the process of moving from T-Mobile to AT&T. AT&T operatives it’s 4G/LTE network alongside its 5Ge and 5Ge services.

However, AT&T’s network requires a device capable of VoLTE voice calling. With an iPhone, that means that you need an iPhone 6 or newer to use AT&T’s network after February 2022 (https://www.att.com/idpassets/images/support/wireless/Devices-Working-on-ATT-Network.pdf).

Hmm. It may be that Boost is hectoring me to upgrade my phone because, in addition to shutting down 3G in March, it will be shutting down Sprint’s 4G LTE network in June. As a former VM customer who got shunted over to Boost when Virgin got out of the mobile business, my phone uses the Sprint network. In that case, what I need is not a new phone, but a new provider that is still operating a 4G LTE network. Maybe not AT&T - aren’t they CDMA? My phone is currently GMS.
