Is the text you ae typing in a container?

For example, a Text box, a Shape, on an image, or in a cell in a table?

When you have this document open and as the active document, is the first item in the Index menu Page, or Section?

If it is "Page," you are working in a page layout document, where each 'page' is a separate section, text does not flow from one page to the next, and new pages must be added by inserting a new Section.

Text in this type o document must be placed in a container (see above).

If the first item in the Insert menu is "Section", you are working in a word processing document. In this type of document, the main text flow is in the Document Body, and flows from one page to the next. If there is no 'next page' Pages creates one.

You can force a new page in a word processing document by inserting a page break at any point in the text. Doing so will open a new page below the one in which the page break has been inserted, but in the same section of the document.

Adding text to the existing page will cause a new page to be generated when the text urns out of space on the existing page, provided that text is entered in the Document body.

Text entered in a Text box (or other container) won't cause a new page to be generated.
