Formatting a SSD drive w/Monterey
I can not format a SSD drive on my husband's new MacBook Pro running Monterey. Disk Utility freezes, and I have to force quit it. I assume this is a software glitch. Is there a fix?

I went to the SanDisk site (Thanks lllaass!) and looked at the comments and suggestions there (actually decided to return the drive). I had tried to format it on my old MacPro running Big Sur yesterday, but had used HFS+. Got further than having to force quit out of Disk Utility and Time Machine on the new computer. Time Machine just quit without freezing, progress. I then decided to format the drive on my old machine as an APFS drive. Success! Time machine appears to be creating a backup as I type. Thanks for the help! Cheers, Dana

What specific SSD?
Is any software on the drive that was provided by the drive manufacturer?
Could you/can you access the drive in Finder?
If you are connecting the drive via a hub try directly connecting the drive to the Mac. You can us a simple adopter as necessary.
SanDisk 4TB drive. I can access it in Finder, but despite now reformatting the drive on my Mac running Big Sur, Time Machine just freezes or says there is a problem. No hub, it connects directly to the Mac without any adapters.
Disk Utilities >> View >> View ALL attached Drives.
Choose the upper most drive by Manufactures Name ( WD, Toshiba, Seagate, Lacie etc )
That is the drive to format in whatever format desired and available in DU.
I spoke too soon! It made a Time Machine backup that was not visible. It was really odd. It took up space on the drive, but it was not visible by that or my other Macs. I give up. I took the drive back today. Hopefully SanDisk can figure this out sometime.
Maybe this will help:
