IPhone incoming Messages Make no Sound when Screen Locked

Although there are several messages on this forum about this, I haven’t found a reasonable solution.


My wife’s iPhone 12 and my iPhone 12 Pro (both on IOS 15.2) don’t play any sound when our screens are locked and an incoming message arrives. This situation has been in place for many months. The messages are getting to my iPhone, and the messages appear on my Apple Watch and iPad (when the message arrives), but the phone doesn’t make the sound it is supposed to make.


The phones are not on mute, all Messages notifications are enabled. Do Not Disturb is not enabled.


’Sometimes’ I will hear my wife’s iPhone make the correct when a message arrives (and her phone is locked), but I have no idea what causes it to happen.


Any ideas on where I might look? Thanks.

Based on your question, I just did a test while not wearing my watch, and the locked iPhone did make the ‘message’ sound (it really surprised me!). If that is the case, is there any way I can still have the iPhone make a sound even if I am wearing my watch?

Thanks for confirming. What you are seeing is expected behavior for the incoming notifications. Those notifications will be found on the Apple Watch, or on the iPhone, but not both. Apple always welcome customer feedback and suggestions here:
