Brother Printer "filter failed" on our new Mac Mini

Printer is USB connected and worked great on the prior Mac Mini (2011)

Got a replacement Mac Mini - with Big Sur (and about to be Monterey) and though computer seems to recognize the printer (Brother HL-L2320D) and puts a green light by it under the Printers in System Preferences, when I try to print, I get the little yellow triangle. In the window for info it says 'filter' - failed....

Looks like from the Brother website the printer is still compatible with OS 11 and 12 (unless I am misunderstanding it) .... any thoughts?
