AirPlay streaming from apps does't work

I'm not able to stream videos using AirPlay from apps (e.g. videos in Safari, QuickTime, etc) from my MacBook to the AirPlay supported projector. When I click the 'stream' button and choose/tick the projector – the video goes into the blank 'streaming to AirPlay' mode as it should, but nothing appears on the projector (like it just doesn't receive any signal). All this while:

  • screen mirroring works just well from my MacBook to this projector
  • both screen mirroring and in-app video streaming works well from iOS devices to this projector
  • both screen mirroring and in-app video streaming woks well from my wife's MacBook Air 2017 with macOS Catalina to this projector

I don't have another AirPlay device/AppleTV to test but I guess all listed above suggests the issue is rather software-based and specific to my MacBook.

Any suggestions? One could say I should use screen mirroring since it works, but it's usually more choppy and has latency unlike direct video-streaming.

MacBook Air M1, macOS Monterey, all up to date.

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 12.0

Hi Vlad1993,

Thank you for posting in Apple Support Communities! From our understanding, when trying to Airplay videos from Safari, the video is black, is that right? Do you hear sound from the video? This can happen with protected material. Some content do not allow for Airplay. What site are you attempting to Airplay from? Are you able to Airplay a video from the Photos app to your projector without issue?

You can try the steps in this article: If screen mirroring or streaming isn't working on your AirPlay-compatible device.

Hope that helps!

Hi,

I'm not able to AirPlay videos not only from Safari, but from any app: I tried Safari (any sites from YouTube to apple.com), QuickTime, as well as some third-party apps, e.g. Documents by Readdle). Once again, it's not content specific since I'm able to AirPlay the same content from iOS devices or another MacBook with MacOS Catalina.

On the MacBook it looks like this:

(the projector is available in the AirPlay menu, the video window goes into this blank view, but the projector doesn't react. Interestingly, the video time-bar doesn't move suggesting the video isn't playing, but once you click "Pause", time jumps some seconds forward like it has actually played).

P.S. Just tried it with videos from Photos app. Interestingly, though the video doesn't AirPlay as well, it gives an error message, something like "The Photo app is not able to play the video since it's format is not supported". Once again, I'm able to AirPlay the same videos from Photos app on iOS...

Ok, I just went to the apple store and tested it with the AppleTV there. Surprisingly everything worked: both mirroring the screen and airplaying a video. Which gets me back to the assumption that the problem might be with the projector (even though it doesn’t make much sense to me why everything works well airplaying from an iPhone, an iPad, an older MacBook and even this MacBook when mirroring the screen, but not this very particular case of airplaying a video from this MacBook 🤔🤷‍♂️).
