Hi corrie281,

If you already made a backup, you can erase your Mac to remove all of your data from it, including your password. Just be sure to sign out of iCloud first (in System Preferences -> Apple ID).

A firmware password is a special low-level password that is disabled by default. It is different than your regular login password. When a firmware password is set, you can't use most of the special boot options, and you have to enter the password before you can start up from a different disk or operating system, or from macOS Recovery.

In order to remove the firmware password, you have two options:

  • If your Mac doesn't have the T2 Security Chip, or if you want to preserve your data, you will need Apple's assistance to remove the firmware password. You can contact Apple Support here: Get Support
