Mouse keeps dropping connection

My mouse is pretty old, from late 2012. But recently it keeps dropping the connection. I'm constantly getting the "Connection Lost" dialogue box. It usually pops back in, but it's an extreme annoyance, since i work at home. Suggestions? Do I need a new mouse?

Hey MaryCarolG,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities! We understand your mouse keeps dropping connection from your Mac. We'd like to help.

The best way to tell if that mouse is on its way out, is to test a different mouse with your Mac to see if the issue resolves or still happens with another mouse. Do you happen to have a different mouse you can test with your Mac to help isolate the issue further?

Also, if your current mouse uses batteries, its also best to change them out to fresh, new batteries as well, just to make sure that's not the issue.

You should also make sure there isn't any interference causing the issue: Resolve Wi-Fi and Bluetooth issues caused by wireless interference

Have you tried to completely delete the mouse from the Mac and pair it as new again? On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Bluetooth. You can delete the device from the list, then pair it again to see if that helps. Connect a Bluetooth device with your Mac (be sure to select your corresponding macOS version from the drop down menu at the top of that article).

Best regards.

The following will require any USB keyboard and mouse. If you don’t have them, borrow or buy them, they are inexpensive!

  1. Connect the USB keyboard and mouse to the computer.
  2. Open System Preferences – Bluetooth
  3. Un-pair the wireless keyboard and mouse.
  4. Turn off Bluetooth
  5. Restart the computer in Safe Mode per the directions in https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262
  6. Restart the computer normally.
  7. Open System Preferences – Bluetooth
  8. Turn on Bluetooth
  9. Re-Pair the wireless keyboard and mouse.
  10. Unplug the USB keyboard and mouse and begin testing the wireless devices again.
