Changing the Screen Time Passcode when you don't have the current screen time passcode

When you want to change the screen time passcode and you don't know it, the phone asks you to enter your Apple ID and passcode. I have entered the current one that works when buying things but for this feature it doesn't. Do I have to use the Apple ID and passcode from the time when the screen time passcode was created? What do you do if you don't have that information anymore since this feature was turned on years ago?

My goal is to wipe the phone clean so I can return it to the store for an upgrade but I can't do that without the screen time passcode.

You need to restore the phone to factory settings using your computer. That will not require the Screen Time passcode→Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support
