facetime join button in message thread

sometimes, after i’ve gotten off of facetime with someone, i’ll go to the message thread and, instead of the facetime button being there, it says ‘join.’ it’ll make the sound as if the facetime had been answered, however no one is there. no matter how many times i kill the facetime and messages app, the join button is still there and the problem persists. what’s up with this? it’s annoying cause i can’t call the person until that button goes away.

It does not. Facetime works like a chatroom that you join. When you call them, it creates the facetime room. When the one persons phone dies, you leave the "chatroom" because no one else is in it. The bug that's happening is your phone still remembers you were in that original room, and tries to join it again, although the other person isn't there. Rebooting your phone is the easiest way to get past this. Me and my girl talk all the time and her phone dies religiously, until they fix it, a quick reboot and you're back up and ready to FT.

This has only started happening to me since I updated my phone to the first update with new FaceTime features (introducing the screen share button even though not yet usable). My phone is completely up to date and this happens everytime the other persons phone dies. It won’t allow me to call back with FaceTime and they can’t call me until the “join” button disappears. This is an issue with the updates and it needs to be fixed. This happens to thousands of people if not everyone. A tiktok video was filled with comments of people saying it happens to them. The best way to engage the “bug” is to be on FaceTime and let the other users phone die. For me it happens 90% of the time. I updated my phone December and it’s been doing it since then so I always update for every bug fix because this one is big and annoying. Please can this problem be reported and actually put higher on list of things to fix.

Hello kaygl1zzy,

Thank you for reaching out in Apple Support Communities. We understand you're not immediately seeing the icon for FaceTime in the Messages app with your contacts. We'll be happy to help.

To help troubleshoot this behavior, we recommend to follow the steps outlined in this helpful article: If an app on your iPhone or iPad stops responding, closes unexpectedly, or won’t open. These additional steps can help resolve the issue you're experiencing with FaceTime.

Please keep us posted with the results.

Kind regards.

I have the same problem! I facetime people quite often, but I seem to only have this ‘Join’ button issue with one particular person that I facetime multiple times every day:/

Now to preface, my solution is not a means to get rid of the ‘join’ button because I am not sure how to do that unfortunately. Occasionally I’ll see the button go back to normal, but it’s a rare sighting lol!

It’s not as quick and convenient as just going to messages and clicking that facetime icon; but in the meantime while waiting for an actual solution, you could go to the messages of the person you desire to facetime like normal, then try clicking on the contact picture of the person, and then click the button with the facetime icon that says ‘video’ :)

You could also go straight to the facetime app and facetime them that way! I’m sorry it’s not as convenient, and we all want to rid of this darned ‘join’ button lol, but the until Apple fixes this issue we have to facetime the old fashioned way hahaha :)

So I have this exact problem. Whenever I am on the facetime call and the other person's phone dies during the call. The facetime call just get's stuck. Post that if I call that same person person, the call just shows as connected in one ring and opens facetime with multiple participants with the same name (most probably the old session is still active and facetime tries to add me to that). The person on the other end most of the times does not even get the call or when they do they have the same issue where the call connects and they see multiple participants.

This started when facetime introduced the facetime link and group calls update.

If apple is watching this! -- > My phone is fully updated and so is the phone on the other side. No I will not restart the phone or reinstall the application every time this happens. A much easier solution would be to just avoid facetime app and use something else. It has been more than 3 or 4 months, PLEASE SOLVE THIS!!!

I know this is old but when this happens to me I just join the call and wait there until it says called failed or something it should say something like that after a while sometimes it takes a while but sometimes it doesn’t but if that doesn’t work I share my screen and sometime it kicks me out the call and the FaceTime button is back but that’s all I found out .

kaygl1zzy,

Thanks for getting back to us and for providing that update. Just to be sure, is your iPhone updated to iOS 15.2? This can help provide software improvements that can help.

If your device is updated to the latest software version, then we suggest to contact Apple Support to review this further. You can contact them through this link here: Get Support
