mac iCloud syncing to Iphone

Trying to upload my 10k mac photos to my iCloud but without them then appearing on my iPhone...

When I go to deselect the 'iCloud photos' option on my iPhone, It says " iPhone was not able to download 1000 full- res photos, if you continue, the low- res versions will be removed".

Obviously I don't want to lose 1000 of my photos - Will they still be in the cloud if i switch this off??

And will this then solve the issue of the mac photos going onto my phone when I resume uploading them to the cloud??

Once all mac photos are in the cloud I can then switch the mac 'iCloud photos' off and put the iPhone ones back on so that only my phone photos automatically save - is this correct??

Many thanks

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.13

No. iCloud Photos is a syncing service. If you have photos on iCloud from your Mac and then turn on iCloud Photos on the iPhone, all of the photos on iCloud will sync to your iPhone and the iPhone photos will sync to iCloud.

Also note that any photo you delete from a device where iCloud Photos is turned on will also be deleted from iCloud and from any other device connected to iCloud Photos. You can potentially reduce the storage space required on a device by turning on Optimize Storage. See: Set up and use iCloud Photos - Apple Support

Apple does not currently offer cloud-only storage for photos. If that is what you want or need, you may want to explore 3rd party options such as Google Photos or Dropbox.
