2021 M1 Macbook Pro auto boot problem

I recently bought an M1 Macbook Pro and immediately discovered that it auto boots on lifting the lid. It seems that there is currently no way to disable this function which I think is supremely dumb of Apple. I travel quite a bit and I want to be confident that the machine is properly shut down in it's case when I'm in transit. I've heard cases of machines auto booting because of the proximity of magnetic objects which, if true, is crazy. If anyone has a solution or a suggestion as to how we can get Apple to offer up a tool to disable this unhelpful feature I'm all ears.

Many thanks for the suggestion. I'm basically computer illiterate and only know enough to be dangerous and my laptop has become an indispensable tool in my life, as it has for most of us. I'll try the FileVault idea but, of course, it won't stop the battery draining if it auto boots. I would really like to encourage Apple to fix this as I believe they should and I plan to make a fuss about it. It makes no sense to not offer the user a choice on this.

Hi NamoPinnacle,

Unfortunately, I don't know of a way yet to disable auto-boot on Apple silicon Macs (M1 and future).

If you're mainly shutting down your Mac for data security reasons, you should enable FileVault, in System Preferences -> Security and Privacy. This ties the existing hardware encryption to your login password, so that your data can't be unlocked without the password. When FileVault is on, your data is fully locked at shutdown, and it remains locked until you enter your login password for the first time. That way, even if your Mac auto boots by accident, your data still remains safe.
