Accidental calling of favorites on hang up on my iPhone

For the last year or so, I've had a problem where I go to end a call which is over by clicking end call, but the other person hangs up first, and the screen change back to the "favorites" or "Recent calls" list, causing me to initiate a call with whoever was below the end call button. I have an iPhone 11, and this never happened with my previous iPhones. It seems something must have changed around that time.

Any advice on how to prevent this from happening? The person who is 8th on my favorites list is getting kind of annoyed.

This is iOS 17+ only, temporary workaround. It's not perfect and has its own limit.

At least you won't call someone accidently by hanging up little too late.

1. Open Shortcuts app (It's integrated in iOS)

2. Tap "Automation" at the bottom of the screen

3. Tap "New Automation".

4. Scroll down and tap "App".

5. Tap "Choose" and select "Phone" then "Done".

6. Unmark "Is Opened" and mark "Is Closed". (Make sure ONLY "Is Closed" is marked.)

7. Mark "Run immediately"

8. Tap "Next" at the top right.

9. On the screen, tap "New Blank Automation".

10. Tap "Add Action".

11. Type in "go to" in the search box and tap "Go to Home Screen" that pops up below.

12. Tap "Done".

That's it.

Now when you call someone, the screen immediately goes to home screen, preventing

accidental calling from favorite or recent list.

If you want to go back to phone app during call just tap the green phone icon at

top-left. It will still go back to home screen when the call ends by either side.

Come on folks… Give Apple more time!! 🤣🤔

The Apple development people are very busy, creating overly complicated, yet extremely limited software; like Focus, Siri, Health, Shortcuts, to name a few.

The tide will change, hopefully soon. And developers will go back to the days of discipline, with a renewed focus on what the customer interface should look like. Apple was once a pioneer in GUI. Let’s hope they get back to the roots.

For those who take the time to post here and hit the ME TOO button, keep doing what you’re doing because the more Apple will listen eventually if there’s enough chatter on one subject.

There are thousands of Me Too’s on this issue. There needs to be a simple 1 second wait time before another call can be placed. Or even more simple, make the screen inert for 1 second after a call ends/drops. This is a serious issue that needs to be fixed. We don’t always talk with the phone to our ear. I work on nighttime emergency response and on DOZENS of occasions I have woken people up who desperately needed that sleep. PLEASE SEND THIS UP THE LADDER

@IdrisSeabright - I'm glad you found a solution that works for you, and thank you for sharing it. It is helpful. However, your tone implies that because there is a work around this isn't a significant issue for a lot of people, and minimizes the difficulty others, myself included, are experiencing. One thing it doesn't take into account is that I have to train the people who accidentally *call me* how to end the call using the side button. This is an issue for both parties on the call, and I can't force somebody else to use the side button to end the call. It's a software problem and really needs a software fix. (And I, like others, have already reported this using the appropriate channels with Apple.)

It’s frustrating and disappointing that Apple hasn’t addressed a basic problem they created. Activating a double-tap feature in the “fav” or “recent call” list could easily resolve this issue. It’s disheartening that such a simple programming fix is overlooked while Apple focuses on newer versions and software updates.

Could someone please forward me the contact number of the apple software engineer in charge of this issue. I want to enter it in my favorite list at the same position the end call icon will appear. I suggest you all do the same to ease the burden on actual favorites unfortunate enough to be placed in that position. I do suggest though that you be very courteous and show empathy to them as they will be returning many calls from random numbers.

Like has been said before but should be stressed again: the truly annonying part is that you cannot undo the placed call - I’m pretty sure there used to be a slight delay so you could hang up a misplaced call in earlier iOS:s. Now it immediatly goes through or creates a push notification, and then an unnecessary callback and need for an explanation etc 🤬.

If Apple fixed this first, there would be much less of a need to also fix the (equally idiotic) return-to-favourites-when-other-party-hangs up design flaw.

I agree. Add a 1 second delay between one call to another. You can even have a switch in settings to toggle on and off if others don't like it. It usually is the other person hangs up first while I'm in motion to hang up. It dials the next person and I hang up from that call. Then they see they missed a call from me and call me back. Huge inconvenience and waste of time for everyone.
