imessage switches phone # recipient

One of my contacts has several numbers saved. I always message the iPhone (Ie their current number) one was a work phone and the other was their office land line. For whatever reason iMessage decided to switch the number it was sending my texts to mid chat (from sending texts to the iPhone # to the work phone # - I noticed because the texts turned green, and after several days I got a text back saying “wrong number”).

Any ideas on why iMessage would bug out like this? It’s kind of disturbing knowing that my imessages might get sent to the wrong # because iMessage bugs out.

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. We'd like to help. It sounds like you have a contact saved that has several numbers. When you want to send to one, your Messages default to the other, mid conversation. Is that correct?

It sounds like there may be another internet account syncing contacts to your device.

Have you recently added or changed the accounts you are signed into on your iPhone?

You can verify your default contacts account and identify other accounts following these steps: Manage and delete contacts on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
