I Mac, today I learned the I Mac is from 2017 and is not compatible with some of my needs.

What BS. can I return the I Mac? Trade it in . upgrade?

Apple sold the iMac (21.5-inch, 2017) until mid 2021. To see why it is slow, I believe we need to proceed with an EtreCheck report. EtreCheck is a useful App to diagnose and identify issues, both hardware and software. It is trusted by many users. Please follow the steps outlined below:

  1. Navigate to: https://etrecheck.com and get the free version of EtreCheckPro.
  2. Download it. It is a free and trusted app. It is often recommended here on Apple Support Communities.
  3. Open EtreCheck, and before running the report, be sure to check “Allow full Drive Access” at the bottom of the EtreCheckPro window.
  4. Run the report, and put it in a post, as shown here: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-250000211. We will then examine the report for issues in your Mac.

Cheers,

Jack

I used to own a very old Mac mini and upgraded

Can you verify that? I know many online vendors have older Macs in stock and will fill orders with them until the stock runs out. However, Apple does not. The 2017 Macs were the latest models up until March 2019.

Again, what is not meeting your needs and what are those needs?

my machine did not automatically update systems and ran very slow

Apple had me install Monterey which took ten hours

I want to use my fingerprint to open systems as I'm getting long in the tooth and I have a tough time in other than direct sunlight

what is the trade in policy, if any? I've only had this 8 months or so at most

So you did not purchase it, as you stated in your original message...

As has already been pointed out, that model was sold by Apple up through October of 2021.

If it is not sufficient for your specific needs, this is no fault of Apple's. You have no call to complain about a gift that you received.

Buy something that suits your needs.
