Just started: Airpods Max mic distortion with Microsoft Teams

I'm running Microsoft Teams under MacOS 12.1 a '20 (Intel) MBP and using my Airpods Max as my primary headset. Starting a couple of weeks ago, people started complaining that my microphone sounded "garbled." This only happens with Teams - not with FaceTime. I've tried multiple Airpods Max headsets - including a brand new set. I've checked all my configuration settings - both in Teams and in MacOS, I've rebooted multiple times and the mic sounds fine when I do a test call in the Teams "Devices" settings. I've checked to see if there's been any updates to MacOS or Teams, and I'm still running into this.

Has anyone else run into this? I realize that APM aren't a Teams certified headset but they've been working great and based on what I'm seeing in my video conferences, there's quite a few Teams users who also use the APM headsets.

Any feedback greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the reply. I first noticed this problem about 2-3 weeks ago when I upgraded to Monterey 12.1. I've also determined this is not a Teams-specific issue.

I've done the factory reset several times with no change in the results. Also, from further testing I've discovered that the mic distortion is not just with Teams but is also happening with FaceTime. However, Teams allows me to self test so that I hear the audio for myself. As I previously mentioned, this is happening with 2 different sets of APM headsets - one of those being brand new, right out of the box.

I don't have another Mac to test with but the problem is not happening when I use FaceTime or Teams on my iPad Pro and iPhone 11. It seems to be specifically happening with my primary computer - my MPB.

One last data point, I've tested using my Jabra Evolve 75 headset and that set works fine with the MPB.

To summarize, it appears to be an issue between Airpods Max and my MBP.

Hello Towjam60

It sounds like you are experiencing issues using your AirPods Max with Microsoft teams. We understand how important this is to you and we are here to help.

Let's reset your AirPods using this article: How to reset your AirPods Max

Since this only happens with one app, let's troubleshoot Microsoft teams as well using this article: If an app on your Mac stops responding, closes unexpectedly, or won’t open

If the issue persists, can you provide a few more details? When did you first notice this? Also, are you able to test with another computer?

Cheers!
