Custom background image and dark mode appearance reset every time I restart

I set my background image to a custom image and also go into system settings and change it to Dark Mode Appearance only to have it reset to the default background image and Light Mode every. single. time. I shut down and turn my computer back on.

Any fix for this? It's maddening.

It would depend on how you set up the background image. Try to open System Preferences > Desktop & Screensaver > Desktop then hit the + sign below. Next sort through your HD for the picture you want and choose it. Next change to Dark Mode. Get out of System Preferences. In the upper left. open the Apple Icon and pulldown to log out to see if this changes the settings when you log back in.

One step I might have left out. When you are looking for the picture in your HD. First "Choose" The folder. this will put the folder content in the large window of Desktop & Screensavers. Click on that picture you want to use in that window, do not check the box to "Change Picture" then log out and back in with your dark mode already engaged. On my screen shot I did not show my Folder for all to see, the large area is blank on purpose.
