Problem connecting to my Gmail account via Apple Mail. Will not recognize password.

Just setting up mail on a MacMini. I know the servers for the iCloud accounts are IMAP for Apple Mail, but I cannot get my Apple Mail to work with either smtp.google.com (offline) or Gmail Rand. If I get a message it says something like "Password not recognized, change password or check Google account" . Also, do I have to turn off the TFA or add an app password for Apple Mail within my Google account?
