phone call issue

I can't seem to find a web article for my specific calling issue. Let's see if I can explain it correctly. My wife stated that every time she calls me she gets a busy signal (she's not blocked!). I have no other known trouble receiving calls. I always call her from the Phone>Favorites section with no issues, but she can't call me from her Phone>Recents tab. She has an iPhone 10 (not the S) and I have the 13 mini.

I popped my sim out a couple days in a row which didn't help her reach me but I tried anyway. Today she tried and got the busy, so she texted me saying to call her. This part is weird to me: I tapped her contact photo at the top of messages, and it displays Call, Video, Mail, and Info buttons. The call and video buttons are black and can't be tapped. I still successfully called her from the Phone app though.

I told my wife this, and she has the opposite issue. If she calls me from the Phone>Recents tab she still gets the busy signal, but if she copies me and taps my contact photo and the Call button she can successfully call me.

She's the contact in my Messages that I've noticed this problem with (so far). We both have the 1-(area code) in our phone number, we've both restarted our phones and put in airplain mode periodically with the same results.

It's nice we've got a workaround to call each other, but are there any ideas what the issue is?

Check to see if the phone number had been inadvertently blocked.

If that didn't help, Update your iPhone. 📲

If that doesn’t work, try a Hard Reset:

Press volume up (quickly)
Press volume down (quickly)
Press and hold the power button until the Apple logo ( ) appears

I agree this is very unusual behavior. I'm guessing that the two of you are not using the same Apple ID? Do you have Dial Assist turned on? I cannot think of any other settings on the phone that could cause that type of behavior. While your carrier handles your phone calls, there has to be something about the phone that is sending some kind of strange command when attempting to make calls from the Recents. If she clears all of the calls in her Recents list, then powers the phone off and back on again and then dials you manually, as you said, she should get through. If she tries to call you later from the Recents list, what happens?

If you had blocked her number, she would not have received a busy signal. She would have heard the call ring to her, and then she would have been sent to your voicemail. What happens if she just dials your number from the keypad, without tapping in Contacts or anywhere else? Then we can see about the other problems you seem to be experiencing as far as making phone calls.
