HDMI volume control on Apple TV 4K

Hi,

I have my Apple TV connected to a projector (Epson TW-9400), that doesn't have any audio output. So I added an HDMI splitter that provides me with an S/PDIF audio signal via a TOSLINK optical cable. This goes to an D/A-converter and directly into my active speakers. The D/A-converter doesn't have a remote for volume control.

I was very surprised that the volume control on the Apple remote doesn't do anything. It seems that the Apple TV doesn't have any internal volume control to adjust the volume that goes out via the HDMI port. Am I missing something, like a setting to activate that? Seems kind of weird...

Best, Boris

Without getting into the specs, optical audio connections generally leave volume control to the receiver, not the sending device.

If your active speakers have an infrared remote, you might be able to train the Apple remote to control them (I rely on HDMI CEC and have no idea of how flexible the infrared configuration is for the Apple remote, only that it has an infrared emitter).
