Problems installing macOS Monterey

Every time I try to upgrade (from macOS Big Sur v11.6.2) to macOS Monterey (via Software Update in System Preferences), I get an error saying "An error occurred loading update." I've tried restarting, deleting and re-downloading the installer, and even waiting (thinking maybe that the servers were too busy). But, nothing is working. Can anyone help? Please and thank you (in advance)!

I've had better luck from the Safe Mode because I evidently have some 3rd party software that interferes with the installation so try the following:

#1 - boot into Safe Mode according to Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3-5 minutes as it's doing the following;
• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed
• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)
• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically
• Disables user-installed fonts
• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

#2 - go to the System/Software Update preference pane and begin the download.

#3 - run the installer from the Safe Mode.

[Running] com.expressvpn.expressvpnd.plist (ExprsVPN LLC - installed 2022-01-15)

[Running] com.anonymizer.deltavpn.L2TPConfigurator.plist (? 8942dbac - installed 2022-01-15)

[Running] org.openvpn.client.plist (OPENVPN TECHNOLOGIES, INC. - installed 2022-01-15)

The above you are using or have installed at least one VPN. Make sure you turn any VPNs off during the download and upgrade.

Uninstall this antivirus app. They are unnecessary and not infrequently cause problems.

Download and run this app so we can find more information about your installation.

https://etrecheck.com/upgrade

It shows what is launched and other information and is very useful in finding causes of problems. After you first launch the app make sure you check Enable full disk access in the box in lower left.

After running the app use the app's feature to paste to clipboard. The in the text box for a reply in this forum click on the addition text icon. This is because the normal reply text box limits how much you can type.
