Mac stuck on checking for updates

I run Big Sur 11.6.1 and have noticed that my System Preference reads "1 update". However, when I choose Software Update, the system gets stuck at "Checking for updates". Nothing freezes, but the wheel keeps spinning and nothing happens. I wish to update the OS (the option was there earlier).

I have tried repeated reboots. I have done a disk utility check. I have tried removing .plist files related to "software update" and "Apple store" (following various advice in seemingly older related threads. Nothing has worked. Any advice, please?

The solution from Jamf did the job.

An easy one: sudo launchctl kickstart -k system/com.apple.softwareupdated

Yeah, I thought that. My next move was to redo the clean install, test the computer for a few days with a virgin account and then use the Time Machine to restore selected files.

Unfortunately all this work did not fix the computer, that randomly reboots.

I'll need to take it to Apple to have them do a full hardware check.

Anecdotal evidence suggests this one time fix is not permanent, and the issue can re-occur on that same mac after reboot, OR after a period of (undetermined) time.

Guys, this is not exclusive to Big Sur (11.6.x) OS since this is happening to me under Catalina (10.15.7) as well. Is there any other possibilities to fix this problem?
