Robotic voice with Airpods Pro microphone on Macbook Pro

I am having trouble with the microphone of the AirPods Pro with magsafe when using my MacBook Pro.

I have been using the Airpods for over a month now and have had some troubles with video conversations via my MacBook Pro 13" 2020 four Thunderbolt 3 ports.  I have had multiple encounters where the microphone of my Airpods would turn my voice into a robotic one. Where it was sometimes possible to understand some parts and sometimes people would be completely clueless. This is quite frustrating in the current work from home situation. The situation only occurs with my MacBook, when I use the Airpods with my ios devices it works fine.

In other posts on several forums, I have seen several ways to "fix" it. I have seen the following:

  1. Reconnect Airpods with the Bluetooth connection.
  2. Reset your AirPods: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT209463
  3. Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295
  4. How to reset the SMC of your Mac: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

Number 3 did the trick for me for quite some time, but the issue has returned! I have also used the 4th which also worked for a while, but after closing the laptop and opening it up again I have a robot voice again.

I have also read that my bluetooth logitech mx keyboard and mouse might be a problem?

What is going on here?

First of all thanks Judysings!

Next up my conclusion:

Okay, so I figured it out. Whether it is a problem of Logitech or Apple I still don't know. But I also got the same problem with my windows machine. It turns out, that my Logitech MX master and my keys were interrupting the Bluetooth signal of my AirPods. One could argue that Logitech is the one who should not be interfering the signal, but on the other hand, one could argue that the AirPods signal should not be able to be interrupted. So I think it is up to the Logitech and Apple engineers to decide.

To solve my problem, I found out that just turning my MX devices off would remove the interruption/distortion of my voice. But as I want to be able to use all of them, I needed a workaround. I found the Logitech unifying USB drive in the box of my MX keys, and read on a forum that using the Logitech unifying ecosystem would solve my problem. So here I am using the frequency of the Logitech unify system and it seems to be working well. I hope this also solves someone else's problem and am looking forward to being able to use Bluetooth again, which is a bit easier.

Same problem here. MacBook Air, IPods3 and Logi BT mouse and Keyboard. Just by turning off the mouse and keyboard the robotic sound and mic stops immediately. I adopted the USB dongle that comes with the logi set and until now, the problem has not presented anymore.

For SURE there is a work to be done on Apple software to consistently handle the multiple connections on Bluetooth. I hope to be receiving a better BT software soon on our updates.

I've exact the same issue with my Airpods Max (and now Airpods Pro as well). It's been bugging me for a long time.

It started when I bought the Airpods Max last year. Sound via the Airpods Max mic is robotic. In Teams calls I switch to the Macbook Pro 2020 Mic.

Strange thing is that it used to work fine with Airpods Pro, but recently that changed.

I can confirm that when I switch off the Logitech MX the sound is fine. (Thanks @PepijnGriff !)

Somewhere along the way the bluetooth drivers possibly changed?

A fix would be very much appreciated :-)

Hi Judysings,

Thank you for welcoming me! I have noticed that turning my mx keyboard and mouse off makes my voice sound normal again. So thank you for that :) I still need to unpair them to see if that has any results. If unpairing doesn't work, I can't just turn them off every time I have a video call. Could there be another solution?

I use Microsoft teams most of the time. But I have also had problems in the voice memos app, so I think it is a Bluetooth problem and not app specific.

I will share an update once I have unpaired them.

Thanks!

My Airpods Pro actually fell within a group of Airpods that could be serviced via Apple for having audio issues. I send in my Airpods wondering if the service would help to clear up the robotic voice on recording and zoom calls etc. I was pretty disappointed when I got my Airpods back only to discover the robotic issue persisted. I'm so thankful I found this thread, because honestly, I never even thought to check for a conflict between the two devices (yes, yes, I know this should be standard issue resolve for two bluetooth devices lol). It's 2022 and I'm just out here thinking bluetooth conflicts are a thing of the past. Using the unifying USB along with my KVM is allowing me to finally use my Airpod Pros as a mic for zoom calls and other recordings if I so choose. Thank you @PepijnGriff for posting your workaround.

I have this problem, too. This seems to be a widespread issue, and there's another thread in Logitech support about it.

This is my setup:

2019 16" MBP running Monterey

AirPods Pro 2019

MX Master 3

MX Master Keys

My workaround is the Logitech unifying receiver, but since I have to use an adapter with it, it's not the low-profile solution that it was designed to be.

Hoping that Apple will work on this problem with Logitech.

Thanks for posting this, and for the answer by PepijnGriff. I've been using a Logitech MX Keys keyboard with my 2020 MBP and AirPods Pro for almost 18 months and not many issues until the past 2-3 weeks. I DO notice that I have more problems with Zoom and Teams, as opposed to Webex (I have robot voice about 75% of the time with Zoom and Teams, and about 40% of the time with Webex). But I have always noticed a lag or interference with bluetooth devices (including the AirPods) if I had more than about three bluetooth devices hooked up (I use the MBP in Clamshell mode hooked up to two external displays with the Logitech Keyboard and a Magic Trackpad). Everything I have read says that absolutely should not be the case. As a result, I usually just leave the trackpad plugged in to cut down on the wireless interference. Hoping this fix (using the Logitech Unifying USB connector) addresses the problem(s).

I have the same issue (robo voice) with the MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2020, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports) and Mac OS Monterey ver. 12.3.1. and mouse Logitech MX Master 2S and AirPods Pro.

I strongly believe that the laptop for 3000+$ and AirPods Pro for 270$ should not have baby problems like this. Shame on Apple!

For instance, the same equipment works well from scratch with Dell or HP laptops.

P.S. turning off the mouse helps.

Same issue here

New workaround though, that I haven't seen mentioned (?), which allows use of MX Master (via bluetooth) whilst on calls with AirPods Pro.

I have found pairing a second bluetooth mouse simultaneously, in my case an Apple Magic Mouse, and just leaving that mouse dormant at the back of my desk, allows me to operate all day with the MX Master and AirPods Pro without any trace of the robotic voice. It seems as if the second mouse runs interference on the interference...

Not ideal of course but far better, for me at least with most of my days sitting at the same desk, than having to turn the MX off or use the USB receiver or fall back to an inferior mouse.

Hope this might also be a viable workaround for some others whilst we wait on the ultimate resolution

I have the same issue, robotic voice during calls whatever the app is (GMeet, Slack huddle, Teams,…) when using my AirPods Pro 2 on my MacBook Pro.

After several tests I found the issue came from my recent purchase of a Bluetooth Microsoft surface mouse. When I use my new mouse I have a robotic voice and when I dont use it, everything is fine.

if anyone faced the same issue and solved it, happy to have the info as I want to keep my mouse and my AirPods to work.

Thanks a lot.
