Locked up phone

I have tried the steps of hitting the up button and hitting the down button and holding the side button to shut down but it does not work. Suggestions?

The trick is to volume up, volume down, power button within a fraction of a second apart.

The sequence:

Press volume up (quickly)
Press volume down (quickly)
Press and hold the power button until the Apple logo ( ) appears
